Perception of the City and walkshop.
Everyone see the environment surrounding us, differently. It all has to do with individual human interpretation.
The term created by Hall in 1968, proxemics, (another new word), to describe the study of space between people along with the cultural, behavioural and social aspects of that space.
Of the perception techniques shown, I felt that the Lynch approach of nodes, paths, districts and edges more tangible than Cullen's serial-vision, place and content. Having said that, serial-vision reminded me of a photo-album; each view along a route would equate to a photo in that album.
Casey looked at things a little differently with his 'thick' and 'thin' places to describe the experiences of a place. It reminded me of how new housing developments are created; what is there is bull-dozed completely and the new roads, parks and houses built. It has to be considered in this case, that these new developments themselves create their own 'thick' places after being a 'thin' place for a while. This could be said for any development, but the sad part is the loss of the previous site history.
